hello,

How are you? I just finished reading the comments in this post, and I don't feel very nice about them. I'd rather not make a big, scary mod post scolding everyone. Instead, I've decided to compile my resources regarding womanism, womanism vs. feminism, and black feminism and make them available to you guys. Also, feel free to use this post as a forum for all of your questions about womanism, racism, etc. and I'll try to answer them as honestly and thoroughly as possible, and if I'm not able, then I'm sure another brilliant user will come to my rescue.

Did you not like the fact that I posted it jw

I meant for it to be a discussion of the comments in the ontd post but it didn't turn out that way. I feel bad about that tbh/my fault.

Oh and I have a pretty broad question actually to all users wtf do you (general you) say to people you know irl when you find something they say really prejudiced/racist. Like how do you handle that?

Another question is does the definition of racism here differ in other countries? Cause honestly I don't know much about other history besides US or Nazi Germany, Apartheid South Africa etc

On another note listening to your voice you sound like one of my closest friends rofl.

I absolutely agree with the voice posts as well. The one about interracial really puts it in perspective.

Because a lot of black women/POC feel left out? The sixth link explains it.

This is a great post, and it addresses topics a lot of people are still really in the dark about. Even though I'm pretty familiar with all of these things, they are definitely dense and require a lot of time and thought, and I think there are new things we can learn from constantly re-examining these issues. I am certainly no expert. This post will be really helpful to the community as well as my personal investment in better understanding these issues.

I wish feminism could be a term/movement able to change and evolve in order to better fit everyone's needs, but I understand that like other terms that have a history of negative connotations, feminism will always carry baggage that many do not believe in taking upon themselves.

Question: Is it possible to be both a womanist and a feminist, or are they mutually exclusive?

May 6 2010, 07:04:26 UTC 3 years ago

Re your last point: I think Womanism can serve to supplement Feminism, and in the words of Alice Walker, "a womanist is to a feminist as lavender is to purple." The two movements can definitely work together.

I'm reading the first link and came on this:
"Making statements that diminish the impact of racism or imply racial discrimination no longer exists: “Gays are the last oppressed minority.”...[etc]"
And immediately remembered a white lesbian webcomic artist saying that the race civil rights fight is pretty much over but gay people still have theirs, and how badly I wanted to just NOOOOOO GOD WHY DID YOU JUST SAY THIS.

Luckily, a (bi) WoC commenter beat me to it and responded in a pretty clear and respectful way just how fucking stupid that comment was. I'm not sure if she (the webcomic artist) admitted she was wrong right there but IIRC it showed in later entries she understood she was.

Also: I'm actually really grateful for your voiceposts, especially with the first one (I was starting to pick up that feeling as well, so thank you for clearing that up). I'm still a little intimidated by some of these posts*, obviously because of my white privilege and it being something that a lot of the white posters here are clearly not used to. I initially joined b/c I figured this would be more like ontd_p and use it as a news outlet for feminist and gender-related things, but it's providing me with much more information and insight in much bigger ways (this is why I secretly like the wankstorms - )
*Please please PLEASE don't accuse me of trying to make it all about me with this comment, that's not my intention here at all

... umm. I'll add this to my memories too. /coolstorybro

I actually misread the title of the first article initially and thought it was about homophobia in nonwhite communities - would anyone happen to have any articles on hand for that? apologies if one of the articles you linked has that, I'm raelly sleepy and my eyes don't wanna stay open any longer, so I'll read the rest tomorrow.

This post is the reason why I'm in this community. I'm a white man and even though I'm a sexual minority (I'm gay), I still have SO MUCH to learn. It's impossible for me to know what it's like for non-white people in my society, especially non-white women. I hope that this community will help me at least get an idea of what life is like for those who aren't as privileged as me (because of race, gender identity, disability, religion, etc).

I might sometimes accidentally make a stupid comment and if I do, call me out on it. I'm well aware that I am ignorant on the majority of the subjects this community covers but I'm trying to learn. I don't expect for my ignorance to be excused or for a pat on the back: just a little patience. I have a lot to learn.

Thank you for the great post. I've spent a lot of my life trying to really think about these things but as a white woman, it is still hard to understand the WOC perspective. This community has been a very crazy good educational, if not difficult, experience even in just the short time.

I've only recently joined myself, but I must admit over the past two years on livejournal in general (not in this comm) I've learned as much from reading wankstorms on livejournal (in many communities *waves at riotlounge* as I have from 'proper' sources. The passion I see, and the eloquence (and sometimes the lack of it) gave me the impetuous to really start to educate myself and examine myself, my identity and my privilege (white, straight, female, fat, lower class).

My education is no one's responsibilty but my own, but I am so thankful to the hundreds of women who blog and argue and comment and share their thoughts, feelings and experiences.

This is such a good post, thank you, I'm going to start reading through all this. Honestly, I have a tendancy to not comment on posts about race because I don't want to derail. I only really discovered the concept of white privilidge in the past year or so and so I know I'm likely to say stupid or just plain wrong. And echoing an above commentor, if I did comment in a way that's offensive or wrong I want to be called out for it, I think white people get so offended at any suggestion that their racist/privlidged that they end up getting even more offensive when attempting to deny it. Umm...I don't know how much of that made sense, it's early morning, and I'm giddy from being able to vote in my first government election, so apologies if that came out completely wrong.

Oh god, also my grammar and spelling is appaling in this comment and I'm not on a paid account at the moment so can't edit it. Please don't judge me too harshly, I'd change it if I could.

I really like this post, but I thought in the other post, people were also concerned about the transphobia shown in the blog. Or maybe I'm confused?

But seriously, good post.

derailing by using trans issues is not cool

yes, some folks did bring up Renee's trans problems.

as a trans person (who, honestly, does not get along with Renee at all and the feeling is mutual), i was pretty insulted that the trans issue was used as a club to attack her when the issue was something else entirely

imo that's all that needs to be said. this community isn't really the place and this certainly isn't the time for dealing with Renee's difficulties with people in the trans community

Thank you for this. My experience in this community has been one of growth and education in a way that I have never felt before. While I recognize that it's not your job to educate people like me (many of whom haven't heard of or understood privilege until it was brought up here), I do appreciate your efforts and realize that they are more difficult for you than they are uncomfortable for me. So thanks for putting forth the effort. I hope to affect some of the change in the people *I* know in the same way you have affected a change in me.

I feel like I skipped a week in this community and I'm totally lost now.

All I know is that I sort of like how you just tried to state the facts and provide links instead of going on a rant or blaming anyone.

I listened to the first Vocaroo. I have dial up and I could actually listen to what you were saying.
That was of the good.

Thank you for the care and thought to post this post.

I am memming it, and looking through it.

I appreciate the effort put this into this community.

I am doing "okay", thanks.

Sometimes I might not get everything said here, or have a tendency to get a little upset, but I like to take a low profile, and listen, observe, learn ( and try not to be too neglectful, and ignorant...per your short talk...) and well, listen some more.

I am an older person than most of you, and I think this community more than anything has kinda shown me that young people (17-35ish) and middle aged people 46ish-60ish) and early seniors (60ish) need to slow down, and listen to each other.

I am a rather long winded commenter, so I'll stop short.
I'll go back to listening now.
